Aminata Conteh’s (b. 1998) practice hybridizes the histories and traditions of Metalsmithing with weaving and basketry. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, she draws inspiration from the collapsing histories that exist between her lived experience as a first generation American and her Sierra Leonean lineage
Conteh holds a BFA in Metalsmithing & Jewelry from MECA&D. She received a 2021 Wingate Lamar Fellowship from the Center for Craft (Asheville, NC), was a Visiting Craft Fellow at SUNY New Paltz (New Paltz, NY) in 2023, and was most recently selected for the inaugural Artist Grant Initiative from Haystack Mountain School of Craft in 2025 (Deer Isle, ME).
Conteh’s work has been featured in group exhibitions at Gallery Loupe (Montclair, NJ), Sidle House, (Freeport, ME), Salon Design (NYC), Portland Public Library (Portland, ME), University of New England Art Gallery (Portland, ME), amongst others.
She maintains an active teaching practice and has led workshops at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (NYC), Contemporary Craft (Pittsburgh, PA), Haystack Mountain School of Craft, Penland School of Craft (Bakersville, NC), and Peter’s Valley School of Craft (Sandyston, NJ).
